The Wisdom Behind Repeating Certain Surahs and Remembrances - الحكمة من تكرار بعض السور والأذكار

Note: This was originally a Fatwa, came to IslamWeb.net and they've answerd it, but it was only in Arabic, so this is its translation :

Question No. 397078:

Some prophetic traditions mention that repeating the recitation of certain Quranic chapters (Surahs) and verses carries great virtue and abundant reward. Why is repetition the cause of such virtue? Why is it not sufficient to recite the Surah or verse with contemplation, reverence, and presence of heart to attain the same virtue and reward as repetition? Sometimes I find myself reciting a verse once with more reverence than when I repeat it. Thank you very much.

Answer:

Praise be to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, his companions, and those who follow him. To proceed:

The Sunnah has prescribed the recitation of certain Surahs, verses, and remembrances (adhkar) in specific situations, along with their repetition. Examples include repeating the "Mu'awwidhat" (Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas) before sleeping and repeating them in the morning and evening remembrances, among many other instances.

Such repetition is to be practiced, whether we understand its wisdom or not. The reason or wisdom behind prescribing repetition may lie in the resulting contemplation and reverence it fosters. It is well-known that repetition is more conducive to deep reflection and being moved by what is being recited.

The Sunnah and the traditions of the Companions and their successors (Tabi'in) have emphasized repeating Quranic verses during recitation. For instance, it is reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) once stood reciting a single verse until dawn, repeating it. The verse is: "If You punish them, they are Your servants; and if You forgive them, indeed, You are the Exalted in Might, the Wise.(Quran 5:118).

Al-Nawawi (scholar), in his book Al-Tibyan fi Adab Hamalat al-Quran, dedicated a chapter to the recommendation of repeating verses for contemplation, citing numerous hadiths and traditions on this matter.

As for you, dear questioner, if you find yourself contemplating deeply in a single recitation, this does not mean that others are the same. Acts of worship are not measured by your personal standard. Moreover, repeating a Surah increases your reward, as every letter recited earns a good deed. When you repeat a Surah, the good deeds multiply with the repetition of its letters. And Allah knows best.
